General List Overview
An email list is also known as a subscriber or contact list. It contains the specific information for each of your subscribers. You must have at least one subscriber on a list before you can use it in an email campaign. Create and customize as many lists as needed for different email campaign purposes. Email subscribers can join any list they wish.
View your lists by clicking on “My Lists” under the list drop down menu. To make edits to an existing list, click on “List Settings” to the right of it.
You are automatically provided with a “default list” when you join Granza. It is prepopulated with the information from your profile. Your default list cannot be deleted, but it can be renamed. Subsequent changes you make in your profile will not affect any list that has already been created.
Each list begins with three basic, but mandatory merge tag fields: First Name, Last Name and Email Address. If you simply want a basic list containing only those fields, that’s ok. You can add additional fields to a list, such as birthday, phone, a drop down menu, etc. Choose to make a field mandatory or not. If you make a field mandatory, the email subscriber will need to enter the information before they can save their profile.
While creating an email campaign, simply select the list you want to use. When you send the campaign, the system will automatically enter each subscriber’s specific information from that list, dynamically, using “merge tags”. (Read more about merge tags).
Subscribers can be added to a list in multiple ways:
- All lists have their own unique public link which can be accessed with any browser.
- You can email or text the link to someone.
- Email the form as an attachment.
- Print physical copies of the list and allow anyone to enter their information in person. Then, add them to the list yourself using the list in your dashboard.
- There is a Quick Subscribe button on your ad which appears in user dashboards and elsewhere. Those users are added to your default list.
- Add any list(s) to your business website, or any other desired location. (The link and html embed code for a particular list is shown on Step 3 of the list wizard. You may need the help of your webmaster to do this.)
- With their permission, add subscribers manually, one at a time.
- Upload your current list of “opted in” subscribers using the import tool. (Step 4 of the wizard.)
Of course, right after someone joins your list, they are also invited to get a free Granza account, courtesy of you. That’s another piece of Granza’s viral networking magic.
NOTE: Below are the maximum specifications for lists as of 6/20/20. If you are unsure as to whether a list is within acceptable parameters, do not upload it. Instead, send us a support ticket so we can properly assist you.
- Maximum number of email subscribers is 75,000
- Maximum filesize is 10MB
Maximum number of characters on the list is 12 million
To get to the List Wizard, click “Lists” in your dashboard, then click “Create a List”.
The List Wizard Contains 4 Steps:
- SETTINGS
- LIST NAME & DEFAULTS requires some basic, but very important information. Complete the other fields on the page. There are a couple of merge tags available on this step. (There is a separate article about merge tags) Merge tags are strongly suggested because they will automatically personalize each email. This will have a greater impact on your subscribers. Personalizing content works. NOTE: If you simply want a basic list containing First Name, Last Name and Email Address, that’s ok.
- If your email address is from a free service such as Gmail, Yahoo, etc, the likelihood of your campaigns ending up in spam are increased. Highest delivery rates will occur if you use your own business email address. So for example, instead of having an email address like hotbugtravel@gmail.com, use hotbugtravel@hotbug.com. Simply speaking, instead of orderstuff@gmail.com, use orderstuff@yourbusinessname.com.
- *|MERGE|* TAGS
- More merge tag options are available at the bottom of the page. Using the slider bar at the bottom, there are other options for each merge tag. Click on the ones you want to appear on the list, make them mandatory fields or not, delete fields, rename, change colors, etc.
- Depending on the fields you choose, they will have different formatting requirements. For example, the phone number field will end up looking like this on the list: (___) ___-____ and will only allow numbers. The “Phone” field can be renamed to Cell Phone.
- You can only delete merge tags on Step 2.
- SIGN UP LIST FORM
-
- You have more options on this step.
- Add Field lets you enter more fields with a mouse click. That automatically puts you into Field Settings. In Field Settings, customize the fields to guide your subscribers. For example, instead of a blank in Field Label, enter “What’s your favorite drink? In Default Field Value, the field could say Soda, Milk, Water, Beer, etc. See the sample below.
Your list will ultimately look like the sample below. You can edit the list name and description too.
-
- Design gives you options on color.
- To preview a list correctly, at the bottom of the page, save your changes first, then click Preview Sign Up Form.
4. SUBSCRIBERS
-
- OVERVIEW shows a list of your current subscribers for a particular list. Click on their name to see the details. Click edit to make changes.
- ADD SUBSCRIBER lets you add your subscribers one by one. Minimally, you need their first name, last name and email address. If you add a subscriber yourself, they must have previously given you permission to do so.
- IMPORT SUBSCRIBERS is for importing your existing lists in a couple different ways. You can only add subscribers and use lists that adhere to our No Spam Policy.
- Whatever fields you have created that are mandatory will be required to add new subscribers. Example: You added Birthday. To complete the subscriber record, Birthday will need to be entered. You can also change the fields for any list.
- Click “List Settings” to the right of a list to make edits. Save your changes.
- In order to send out a campaign, you must have at least one subscriber on the list you select.
- A subscriber can change their preferences by clicking on the link in any email they receive from you. You must have their permission to make changes yourself in their record.
Prohibited Lists and Subscribers
The examples below do not constitute someone subscribing to a list.
-
-
- People that have made a purchase from your website.
- People that have contacted you through your website.
- Any list that is bought, rented, or obtained free from anyone.
- People you met at a trade show.
- People that have entered a contest or promotion you ran.
- Friends, family, colleagues or members of a group. This includes those from LinkedIn©, Facebook©, Youtube© and the like.
- You cannot arbitrarily add subscribers to other lists. The rules are that you can only send them information directly relevant to their original expectations.
